Two conventions that have overstayed their welcome: being first as a means of business value, and education through memorization. I reflect these insights through two events from 100 and 200 years ago. I also make a case for what could be done differently, by treating the concept of "first" as the begining of the journey not the goal, and using existing material as the jump-off point for investigation instead of the destination. Somewhere in these topics I also cast dought on the accuracy of factial-recognition and talk a little bit about why, from a computer science perspective.
